The Velvet Rope opened in Portland in 1997 and still runs on weekends from a 10,000 square foot building on SE Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard. It is the anchor of an Oregon scene that lives almost entirely inside Portland city limits. We could not find a club in Salem, Eugene, Bend or Medford, so couples from those towns usually make the drive up the valley.
Portland has more variety than its size suggests. The Velvet Rope has two full bars and a large dance floor, with themed nights on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Club Privata, downtown, spreads across three levels with two full bars and food, and enforces its dress code. Sanctuary, on NW 9th Avenue, is a sex-positive space that welcomes swing, poly, kink and LGBTQ+ crowds and puts on something most nights of the week, from mixers to classes.
The tone in Portland is relaxed and inclusive, and bars are the norm rather than BYOB, since The Velvet Rope and Club Privata both pour their own drinks. Most places also mix couples and singles, so read each night's description before you go. A couples-only evening is the exception here, not the rule.

- Portland. All three confirmed clubs are here: The Velvet Rope in Southeast, Club Privata downtown and Sanctuary in Northwest.
- Salem and Eugene. We found no club in the Willamette Valley south of Portland, so couples here usually drive north.
- Ontario. This corner of Malheur County runs on Mountain Time and sits closer to Boise than to Portland.
Most of Oregon is on Pacific Time, but most of Malheur County, including Ontario and Vale, uses Mountain Time.
