Local laws decide a lot of this. In some states and cities on-premise clubs are common; in others the law pushes clubs toward off-premise nights, private memberships, or events held in hotels instead. That is one reason hotel takeovers are so popular in some regions.
Signs of a good club
- Rules on the wall and staff who explain them. A club that walks newcomers through the house rules takes consent seriously.
- A door policy that protects the room. Most good clubs cap or charge single men differently. It is not unfair; it is what keeps couples coming back.
- Clean, bright where it should be. Toilets, towels, lockers and the bar tell you how the rest of the place is run.
- A newcomer night or tour. Many clubs run an early walk-through for first timers before the crowd arrives.
- Regulars. If the same couples are there every month, they know something.
Warning signs
- Staff who cannot tell you the rules, or rules that are not enforced.
- A room that is mostly single men waiting for couples.
- Pressure to buy a long membership before you have seen a single night.
- Recent reviews that mention being touched without asking. Believe them.
