Plain definitions for the words you will see on lifestyle profiles, event listings and club websites. No coyness, no winking. If you are reading a profile with a term you do not know, it is probably here.
The basics
- The lifestyle
- The community's own name for itself. Broader and softer than "swinging", and the phrase most people actually use about themselves.
- Vanilla
- Not in the lifestyle. Descriptive rather than an insult, and often used about the non-lifestyle parts of someone's life, as in a vanilla friend or a vanilla job.
- ENM / CNM
- Ethical or consensual non-monogamy. The umbrella term covering swinging, open relationships and polyamory. The word doing the work is consensual: everybody involved knows and agrees.
- In the scene
- Active in a local community: attending events, known to hosts, part of the regulars.
- Playing
- Any sexual activity with people outside your relationship. Deliberately vague, because the specifics vary.
What people are open to
- Soft swap
- Playing with others while stopping short of intercourse. Where the line falls varies by couple, which is why it should always be said out loud. See soft swap vs full swap.
- Full swap
- Intercourse with someone other than your partner, agreed by everyone in advance.
- Same room
- The couple stays in one room together while playing. Very common, and often a firm requirement rather than a preference.
- Separate rooms
- Partners play in different rooms. Asks more trust, and is usually a later step rather than a first one.
- Same room only, no swap
- A couple who play alongside another couple in the same space, but only with each other. Extremely common for first outings.
- Voyeur
- Enjoys watching. A complete preference in itself, not a warm-up to something else.
- Exhibitionist
- Enjoys being watched. The natural counterpart, and the reason group rooms exist.
People and roles
- Unicorn
- A single woman who plays with a couple. Called a unicorn because the number of couples looking for one vastly exceeds the number of women interested in being one.
- Unicorn hunters
- A couple searching for that woman, usually with a long list of requirements. Frequently used with an eye-roll, because the search often treats a person as a missing accessory.
- Hotwife
- A woman whose partner actively supports and enjoys her playing with others, generally without joining in. See hotwife, stag and vixen.
- Stag
- Her partner, in a dynamic where his pride and enjoyment are the point.
- Vixen
- The counterpart term to stag, and increasingly preferred over hotwife because it names both partners as active.
- Bull
- The single man in a hotwife or stag and vixen arrangement.
- Cuckold
- A related dynamic where humiliation of the male partner is a deliberate erotic element. A different taste from stag, and not a synonym for it.
- Single male / SM
- A man attending alone. Numbers are usually limited at events, and expectations of behaviour are higher.
- Cuddle puddle
- A group of people lying together, affectionate rather than necessarily sexual. Common at house parties.
Events and venues
- On premise
- A venue where playing happens on site, with rooms provided.
- Off premise
- A social venue with no play on site. A bar meet or a dinner. Where most people begin.
- Meet and greet
- A purely social gathering, often specifically for newcomers. No expectations, and the gentlest possible introduction.
- Takeover
- A lifestyle group books out a hotel, resort or venue for a weekend. Everyone in the building is there for the same event.
- Lifestyle cruise
- A full or partial ship charter. Ranges from a few hundred guests to a whole vessel, and the ship's own rules apply on top of the organiser's.
- House party
- A private party at someone's home. Invitation only, usually vetted, and the etiquette is stricter than at clubs precisely because it is someone's house.
- Play room
- The room set aside for playing. May be private with a door, or open and shared.
- BYOB
- Bring your own bottle. Very common, since many clubs are not licensed.
- Wristbands
- Used at some venues to show who is open to being approached. The system is explained at the door and varies by club.
Talking to people
- Compersion
- Pleasure taken in your partner's pleasure. The opposite of jealousy, and the emotional engine of most of this.
- New relationship energy / NRE
- The intoxication of something new. Well known, short-lived, and worth naming out loud so nobody mistakes it for a verdict on their existing relationship.
- Drop
- The low that can follow an intense experience, often a day or two later. Common, temporary, and much easier when both partners expect it.
- Veto
- An agreement that either partner can call a stop, at any point, without having to justify it. Most couples have some version.
- Safe word
- An agreed word that stops everything immediately. Chosen so it cannot be mistaken for part of the moment.
- Check in
- Deliberately pausing to ask your partner how they are doing. The habit that separates couples who do this well from couples who have a bad night.
On profiles and messages
- DTF
- Down to, put politely, get on with it. Blunt, and usually a sign of someone who has skipped the social part.
- Discreet
- Not out about the lifestyle, and asking you not to out them. Nearly universal, and a request to be taken seriously.
- Face pics on request
- Their public photos are cropped or masked, and they will share a face after a conversation. Standard practice, not evasiveness.
- No single males / couples only
- A common restriction on events and profiles. Not personal, and not worth arguing with.
- Verified
- Means wildly different things on different platforms, from a confirmed email to attendance at a real event. Worth checking which. See how to spot a fake profile.
- Upside down pineapple
- The community's best-known symbol, used far more as an in-joke than as a genuine signal to strangers. See the upside down pineapple.
If a term on a profile is ambiguous, ask. In this community, asking someone what they mean by a word is completely normal and is treated as good manners rather than ignorance.
New to all of it? What is swinging is the plain-language starting point, and your first club night walks through an evening from the door to the drive home.
